Day 11/365: Marcus Aurelius on history

Welcome to The Stoic Ledger, a daily money meditation from one of the stoic sages.

11/365: Marcus Aurelius on history

“Look back over the past, with its changing empires that rose and fell, and you can foresee the future too.” – Marcus Aurelius

The past gives prescient insight to the future. Fortunes will be won and lost. Markets will go up and down. Fear and greed will prevail.

How much can we learn by studying the past? History is invaluable when striking our path forward, for it shows the common potholes of the past.

“But this time is different.”

Why is this time different? How many times has this phrase been uttered and exclaimed in the past? What do you gain if you’re right? What do you stand to lose?

As students of history, we can inoculate our money from the known financial diseases that travel in the air we breathe.
