Day 17/365: Epictetus on direction

Welcome to The Stoic Ledger, a daily money meditation from one of the Stoic sages.
17/365: Epictetus on direction
“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” – Epictetus
Do you aspire to attain financial independence? What do you have to do to get there?
Do you want to be debt-free? What do you have to do to get there?
Do you want to financially support others? What do you have to do to get there?
This message from Epictetus is about intentionality. Defining an aim and pursuing it. When you know where you want to go and who you want to be, execution is the only obstacle standing in the way.
To understand this principle is to unlock a core virtue from Stoic philosophy: temperance, the self-discipline of sticking to the plan, day after day.
