Day 60/365: Diogenes on philosophy

Welcome to The Stoic Ledger, a daily money meditation from one of the Stoic sages.

60/365: Diogenes on philosophy

“If I gained one thing from philosophy is that at the very least, I am well prepared to confront any change in fortune. – Diogenes

This is what steeping the mind in Stoicism, in philosophy, is all about.

It’s learning to handle the volatile markets of life. Up and down. Happy and sad. Healthy and sick. Gain and loss. Good and bad.

We all experience both sides of the coin at some point. Some flip heads for a long streak, but across a pool of large numbers, the averages play out. The downsides will appear. Fate will turn the coin to tails.

The purpose underlying our Stoic studies is improvement in our coping capacity with the changes that are inevitably coming.
