Day 73/365: Epictetus on the definition of freedom

Welcome to The Stoic Ledger, a daily money meditation from one of the Stoic sages.

73/365: Epictetus on the definition of freedom

“Is freedom anything else than the right to live as we wish? Nothing else.” – Epictetus

What’s your definition of freedom? Is it any different than the definition Epictetus outlined?

Money is a very powerful lever toward freedom, only if used and deployed with care. Freedom to spend time how we want, working on what we want, surrounded by who we want to be around.

More money enables more of this freedom, but so does less desire, less consumption, less extravagance.

So if freedom is what you so desperately want, ask yourself today, is it more important than that next coveted purchase?
