Day 62/365: Seneca on putting to good use

Welcome to The Stoic Ledger, a daily money meditation from one of the Stoic sages.

62/365: Seneca on putting to good use

“No person has the power to have everything they want, but it is in their power not to want what they don’t have, and to cheerfully put to good use what they do have.” – Seneca

There’s one thing in this finite world that can be infinite. Drinking from its’ well makes one anguish with thirst, never satisfied, never quenched, always yearning for more.

It’s our wants.

In history, there always has been and there always will be a Siren song of desire. There always has been and there always will be more “stuff” than we can ever have. As we draw near to each of these hollow temptations, we wreck and ruin and waste our short lives.

The illusion? That the next item on the list will be the one that does it. The one the satiates and satisfies, the one the settles our feverish desire. But we both know this isn’t true.

Let’s do as Seneca implored and “cheerfully put to good use” the bounty that we do have.
